Task One: Provide a forecast of what the workforce demand would be over a five-year period to produce and market your team’s technical application or process. Include the impact such production would have on the marketplace.

 

Over the first five-year period of the production and marketing of our product there would be a multitude of positions needing to be filled. There would need to be marketing directors to oversee how the product will be introduced to consumers. Given that our product is a bicycle, the product could be handmade or produced in a mechanical factory. In both situations there would be a need for a large labor force: assemblers, machinist, packers, supervisors, and engineers. The demand of workers would strengthen the marketplace since there would be a circulation money, especially in the lower class since some jobs would require low skilled workers.

 

Task Two: Give two examples of undergraduate or graduate degree programs in science or engineering that directly relate to your team's NCT technical application. For each program, be sure to include the following: the URL address of the institution, the department (for example, chemical engineering, electronic engineering) where the program is offered, and a brief description of the program of study.

 

Our team’s NCT application has to do with converting the wasted kinetic energy from bicycles into electrical energy. This has multiple environmental benefits in relation to renewable energy. At the Georgia Tech School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a degree is offered in environmental engineering called a BS degree. This is meant to “provide students with fundamental knowledge of scientific disciplines and engineering principles that are used to address emerging environmental issues such as sustainable air, water, and land resources; human health; and environmental restoration.” (gatech.edu) It combines the knowledge of environmental studies and engineering to manufacture a program for the students of today, for the people of tomorrow. This is classified under the Environmental Engineering department of Georgia Tech.

An undergraduate program at Princeton called the Program in Sustainable Energy is geared toward students who intend on further pursuing the field of Sustainable Energy Science and Technology. It also falls under the department of Environmental Engineering and also the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. According to Princeton University’s department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, this program is relevant because “The future of societies, the global economy, and the global environment depend on collaborative research into renewable energy, alternative fuels, advanced energy conversion and storage systems, technology transfer to developing countries, and prudent judgment on policies to support sustainable energy technology.” (Princeton.edu)

 

Task Three: Develop an idea for a new science and/or engineering degree program that might emerge given the advancements in scientific knowledge that the team has identified. Provide a title and 100-word description of this new degree program.

 

Title: Energy Engineering

A new engineering degree program that might emerge due to the advancements in scientific knowledge that the team has identified would be called Energy engineering. Within this degree program students would learn about energy and the types of energy. All the while students would also learn how each type of energy is related to the other. From there students would be taught how to mechanically make the best use of each energy type in order to get a desired result, such as electricity which is something beneficial for society. Energy engineering degree program would allow for new structures/machines to be built that could use energy more effectively and as a result improve society.
